Web Hosting Control Panels
Web Hosting control panel is a web interface that provided by the hosting company. Web Hosting panel, as a rule, have the following parts:
- Controlling access to website
- Creating and configuring databases, mailboxes, subdomains, parked domains, ftp accounts, files, etc.
- Web-site visitor stats
- Time and consumed web space and transfer (bandwidth).
- Dozens of other modules depending on the control panel used

The most well-known control panels are:
- CPanel: Surely the most popular web hosting control panel.
- Plesk: similar to CPanel, but not so popular.
- Webmin: A free option, suitable for maintaining a server with a web hosting customer.
- DirectAdmin: Fewer opportunities as the two mentioned earlier, but also popular and may be easier to save for a newbie.
What control panel suites you?
I personally use Webmin, because I usually run servers, not web-hosting accounts. If I were to use the web-hosting account my choice would be CPanel or DirectAdmin. CPanel, because it is the most popular and there is an opportunity for almost every task. DirectAdmin because it is smaller and neater, but also very popular. I say “popular” so often, because I wanted to know, the software only if it is sure to stay around. Also, if you use a “popular” control panel, you’re sure to find another host easy with the same group, when you change hosting provider, which is something you’re going to do sooner or later. At last, the “popular” panel for the reason, many popular Web hosting customers have voted for them.

Obviously I’m a bit disappointed that you fail to mention OpenPanel:). Although we’re definitely not in the big league yet with regards to installed base, we do offer a comprehensive and free (open source) option for situations where webmin would not suffice. I invite you to take a look!

Webmin is a general purpose web-based system administration tool. It isn’t designed for managing virtual hosting accounts.
Luckily, though, the same fellow who created Webmin also has another project called Virtualmin…which is a web hosting control panel.
You should check it out, if you like the Webmin way of doing things and do need a web hosting control panel. But, as you’ve pointed out, for general system administration tasks, Webmin is the right tool for the job.
