FAQ: What is co-location?

May 5th, 2008 by Samuel Becks

Co-location (co-lo) is really the most advanced level of any hosting service.

The customer has some server and gives for rent space for the co-lo. The customer may have the choice of using telecommunication lines offered by the hosting facility or choose to contract directly with a telecommunications company for outside lines.

A co-lo is generally used because it is well-situated to take advantage of network access points (NAPs) and offers other features generally associated with data centers, such as extended power backup capability, climate control and a staff that is on call 24 hour/day, 7 days/week (24 x 7) in order to re-boot servers, or change configurations, if necessary.
